MEANWHILE

About the Series

In this series of photographs, the artist wanders into parks, in search of spaces that have aged to a point of overgrowth and natural decay. The sharpness in the details, textures of bark and foliage, along with the form the trees take as they survive, become important to the artist, not in a botanical sense, but instead, as a way she can recognize the trees, the place, and herself as all change with time.

In the process of revisiting parks, Itala Tejada is constantly recalling her own ideas of mortality, the passage of time, and regret, as change occurs. Since sharpness and clarity are priorities, her process with medium format film usually involves long exposures, high focal lengths, and tripods. Tejada’s quiet imagery reveals a silent presence within the photographs.
